galizia iconFede Galizia (c. 1578-1630), was an Italian painter of still lifers, portraits and religious scenes. Galizia was born in Milan and studied art with her father, an engraver, miniaturist and designer of ceremonial clothes, which impacted her work, for example, in her creative design for Judith’s dress in Judith with the Head of Holofernes (1596/1601). She was not specialized in one genre; she produced a diverse collection of works. Gian Paolo Lomazzo included her at the age of twelve in his Idea del tempio della pittura. Scholars did not discover Galizia until the 20th century. Her most important and best-loved works are a series of naturalistic still life.
