Getting to Pisa

By air:
Direct flights connect Galileo Galilei International Airport to several Italian cities and numerous international destinations. Visit the airport website for information on arrival and departures times.
The airport is approximately 4 km from the historical centre of the city of Pisa, located at the “Pisa Aeroporto” exit of the Firenze–Pisa–Livorno (SGC FI-PI-LI) superstrada or freeway, and the A12 Genova-Rosignano autostrada or motorway.
The city centre can be reached from the airport in just few minutes:
• by trains, connecting the railway terminal of the airport with “Pisa Centrale” station;
• by bus, an urban line (LAM Rossa) (see the map) connects the airport to the “Pisa Centrale” station and the centre of Pisa every 10 minutes. The urban bus terminal is located at the arrival side of the airport exit;
• by taxi, the taxi rank is also found at the airport exit - on the arrivals side. The Radio Taxi service (24 h) operates in the city of Pisa, telephone +39-050-541600;
• by car, a number of car hire companies service Pisa airport.

• By train:
“Pisa Centrale” station is one of the main regional and national railway junctions. Frequent trains run to Florence, Rome, Genoa and Lucca.
Visit www.ferroviedellostato.it for information on arrival and departures times.
The station is at the southern edge of the city's historical centre, around two kilometres from the airport. The taxi rank and the bus stop for urban routes direct to Piazza dei Miracoli , the airport and other destinations can be found outside the railway terminal.

• By car:
From Florence:
- 1st choice: take the motorway A11 Firenze-Mare, exit at Pisa Nord, take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km);
- 2nd choice: take the freeway SGC FI-PI-LI (Florence-Pisa-Livorno), exit at Pisa Nord-Est (for the Cisanello hospital centre and the eastern area), at Pisa Aeroporto (for the airport and the central-southern area), at Pisa Aurelia (for the Leaning Tower and the western area).

From Rome:
- 1st choice: take the motorway A1 to Florence, then motorway A11, exit at Pisa Nord, then take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km);
- 2nd choice: take the motorway A12-E80 from Rome to Civitavecchia, then the SS1-E80 Aurelia to Rosignano Marittimo, then rejoin the A12-E80 to Pisa and exit at Pisa Centro.

From Genoa:
- take the motorway A12 Genova-Rosignano, exit at Pisa Nord, then take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km).

Restrictions in accessing the historical centre: most of the historical centre of Pisa falls within the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL). Only authorised vehicles may have access to this zone; the entrances (electronic barriers) are monitored by 24 hour cameras and unauthorised access is sanctioned with a fine. Visitors staying in a hotel within the ZTL zone can have their hotel issue them with a temporary permit. Visitors with restricted mobility and in possession of a disabled sticker may be permitted to entry by requesting authorisation in advance from the Polizia Municipale, tel. +39-050-910851|910810.

Transportation in Pisa

• Bus:
Three urban lines connect the central railways station with the most important areas of the city:
• LAM rossa: airport and north-west side
• LAM blu: Cisanello hospital and south-east side
• LAM verde: north-east side
A detailed map of connections can be found at www.cpt.pisa.it

City Sightseeing (open-top double-decker bus operating from April to October) offers both a tour of the historical centre, which runs from the Lungarni and from Piazza dei Miracoli, and a route that reaches as far as Parco di San Rossore.

• Bike:
Thanks to its compact size, the concentration of the places of interest in the historical centre and the plentiful pedestrian areas, the city is ideally set for sightseeing on foot. The bicycle is an equally good value and alternative means of transport. Long used by locals and the numerous university students, the success of various bike and four-wheel bicycle ventures that have been launched in the city in recent years attest to its growing appeal amongst tourists also.
Other information can be found at www.toscanaintour.it

• Boat:
Boat trips (available from May to October) offer visitors the opportunity to admire Pisa from an unusual and interesting viewpoint. There are two main routes: the Lungarni Tour, following the stretch of river that crosses the historical centre, and the Nature Tour, that extends westwards to the Parco di San Rossore.
